Joan Mogul Garrity
is a trainer who is known for her highly engaging and extremely
practical workshop presentations. Joan's focus is on providing
concrete, usable strategies and tools that participants can
immediately apply to their work.
With a thirty-year
background of both
direct service delivery and training of health care, social
service, and education professionals, Joan is uniquely qualified
to help participants feel more competent and comfortable in
doing their work.
Her career has
taken her from clinic volunteer, to director
of counseling for
Planned Parenthood of Maryland, to the primary creator of a
series of curricula developed for the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention in their fight against the HIV epidemic.
Her conceptual model of behavior change synthesizes all current
theories into a process that is useful and accessible. She is
author or co-author of over 20 publications, including articles,
books and curricula. From the Philippines to Russia, and
throughout the United States, she has presented her simple
strategies for difficult communication to rave reviews. In
hundreds of workshop presentations, participants have reported
that these techniques make the theoretical practical.
Joan is the 2007
recipient of the "Mary Lee Tatum Award." This award is given by
the Association for Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education
(APPLE). It is the highest honor given by APPLE, as it
recognizes individuals who, like Mary Lee Tatum, "exemplify the
characteristics of an ideal sexuality educator."
